How much is your data worth?
Good question. It is often very difficult to assign a value to something we cannot touch or feel. We all know what our computers, monitors, printers etc. are worth. But how much is your data worth?
How many hours did you spend working on that file for a client? How long would it take you to reproduce that file if it were lost? How quickly could you recover from a major disaster (hard drive crash, virus attack, stolen PowerBook)?
Once again, we must ask how much is your data worth? All this leads us down to one final question, do you have a backup plan?
Here are some things to consider in a back up plan.
Develop a backup plan
Determine how often you need to backup, select a drive to backup to, and choose
backup software you can rely on.
Backup often
If your files aren't backed up, you can't restore them after a disaster. Make sure to back up frequently. Most people should back up daily.
Automate your backups
Schedule your backups to run when it's convenient for you-at night, on weekends, or when your computer is least active.
Back up more than just documents
Don't limit backups to just certain files-you'll inevitably need one that wasn't backed up. When disaster strikes, you can restore your entire hard drive in just minutes. Consider the relative value of everyone's data. Some computers require nightly backups, while others require backups every other day. Establish groups with different priorities by scheduling a different Backup Server script for each group.
Don't procrastinate
Don't wait for disaster to strike Far too many people start a back plan after disaster has struck and data has been lost. Develop your backup plan now!
